Coronavirus: Why some people won’t catch Covid from close household contacts

Why do some people living with a person who has Covid-19 not test positive at all? A medical expert breaks down how and why this happens.

Why do some people living with a person who has Covid-19 not test positive at all?

According to medical expert Michael Good, the answer may come down to good hygiene and how much space people keep between others who live in the home.

The Griffith University professor explained to 3AW there was “no easy answer” for why some avoid catching the virus but some factors leaned towards people “ expelling more air” in the household.

“For example, we know some people speak more loudly … some people are larger than others and larger people expel more air,” he said.

“Some people wear masks, others do not, even in households.

“Some people keep further away from other people when they talk.”

People who are isolating at home are encouraged to wear a mask, avoid contact with others as much as possible and disinfect surfaces in shared areas like door handles, taps and benches, government health guidelines state.

Prof Good said other unknown factors were not fully understood but said research indicated most cases followed the “80-20 rule”.

“It looks like about 80 per cent of transmission is responsible for about 20 per cent of the population infected,” he said.

“And the 80 per cent infected are responsible for about 20 per cent of transmission.

“The question is still very much a research question.”

Prof Good reiterated one of the best steps to avoid catching the virus from a household contact was to get vaccinated.

Other proactive steps involved using separate amenities, including bathrooms, and even eating utensils.
