State-funded coronavirus testing and vaccination sites in some of the Bay State’s hardest-hit communities will “likely” continue to operate “in a pretty significant way” for the foreseeable future, Gov. Charlie Baker said.
“We’ve always said that the work we do on both vaccines and testing are going to be driven to some extent by the facts on the ground and I think you’re likely to see us continue to operate in a pretty significant way both the vaccine programming and the testing programming for as long as we need to,” Baker said during an appearance in Everett on Monday.
Coronavirus cases have been on the rise in Massachusetts throughout July as the delta variant rages across the state. Free Stop the Spread testing sites are currently funded through the end of September, but Massachusetts has received billions to cover testing and vaccinating efforts.
State guidelines currently recommend a coronavirus test for anyone who develops symptoms — including mild symptoms — or has been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
The administration first launched the Stop the Spread sites in July 2020, growing the program to include 35 locations in communities that have seen some of the highest transmission rates.

The seven-day average of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases per day stood at 571.6 on Monday, according to Department of Public Health data. That figure is nearly nine times the record low of 64.1 average new cases per day observed on June 25, but still pales in comparison to the Jan. 8 peak of 6,234 new cases on average.
