Met Office Urges Caution As Heavy Rains Sweep Across England

Warnings of devastating weather conditions have been issued in many places across England urging people to stay at home wherever possible.

“Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop during Tuesday across much of Wales, northern and central England,” the Met Office warned. “These will last well into the night across north Wales and northwest England in particular where they could be prolonged in places.”

It comes after a heatwave swept across England pushing mercury above 30C in most regions. The temperature has now dropped in some of these regions and Brits have braced heavy rains which are causing floods.

About 30 mm of rain could fall within just an hour with some places seeing about 60 mm in just a few hours, experts say. There is a high probability of localized flooding in the north and in Scotland.

According to the Met Office, the devastating weather could reach up to Thursday. Thunderstorms and heavy rains are expected to hit most parts of the UK.

People in Scotland have been warned to expect ‘persistent rainfall, heavy at times prompting more flooding and transport disruption.

In an effort to spread awareness of the weather conditions, the  Environment Agency declared 10 flood alerts for England. Regions in south east as well as in Somerset are said to be the most affected.
