There has been a touching gesture for a family ‘torn apart’ after a horror smash claimed the lives of a mother and her two young children.
More than $60k has been raised for a family “torn apart” after a fiery smash claimed the lives of a mother and her two young children in Melbourne last week.
Extended family member Cheryl Gherini set up a GoFundMe page after Koby Poole, 35, her eight-year-old daughter Chloe and 20-month-old son Harrison died when the vehicle they were travelling in struck a pole and burst into flames on August 20.
Police said the Ford Territory was travelling southbound along Flemington Rd in Parkville, approaching Grattan St, when it struck the kerb and smashed into a pole.
Ms Gherini said Ms Poole left behind her partner Craig, and two boys Lachlan, 9, and Liam, 6, who both suffered from a rare genetic disorder Tyrosinemia.
“This is a condition that requires specialist medical care, medication and a closely monitored low-protein diet,” she said.
“At the time of the accident, Koby was returning from the Royal Children’s Hospital, having collected essential pharmaceutical medicine for Lachlan and Liam.”
Ms Gherini said the funds would go towards the ongoing care of Lachlan and Liam – as of Wednesday afternoon $62,673 had been raised.
“This is a family that has literally been torn apart,” she said.
Craig, who did not wish to disclose his surname, issued a statement on Monday thanking the community for their support.
“I’d like to thank the community for their love and support at this difficult time following the loss of my partner Koby and my beautiful children Chloe (8) and Harrison (20 months),” he wrote.
“I have no words to describe how we’re all feeling. This tragedy will take some time to process and we ask for some privacy at this time.”
The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
