A Perth driver part of the bizarre sovereign citizen movement using illegal fake plates is believed to have had their car impounded.
A passerby took a photo of the Toyota HiLux calling out the odd features before it was impounded for having fake numberplates.
“Found my first cooker today! Was a pleasure getting it impounded for fake plates,” the Reddit user wrote.
On the fake numberplates the word “private” is written in white letters with a black background.
On the border, there is the phrase: “Commonwealth of Australia.”
It appears there is also a spelling mistake with the words “non-commercial” incorrectly spelled as “non-commerial”.
The back tray of the vehicle has a sticker with a coat of arms including a horse and a lion.
The sovereign citizen movement is a group of people, sometimes conspiracy theorists, tax avoiders, and activists that say they answer to their own version of Australian law.
Social media users were quick to tear into the “cooker”.
“Selfish entitled morons who’ve never actually seen real hardship in their lifetimes. We call Australia the lucky country for a reason. This is the downside of that, unfortunately,” on person commented.
“Not willing to pay tax but willing to drive on taxpayer-funded roads,” one joked.
Another added: “I live in the US and I’ve seen more crazy alt-right stuff in Perth than I have in the state I live in! It’s mind-boggling.”
The spotting of the Perth number plate comes after passerby took a photo of a very unusual licence plate they saw in Maryborough, Queensland, and posted a picture on Reddit.
The “illegal” plate has the words: “Land of Terra Australis. R-80-AMB-001. Private Property. All Rights Reserved. People’s Court.”
It also has a number of different symbols, which are difficult to make out, but has an image of Australia.
Some Reddit users said the plates probably belong to someone claiming to be a sovereign citizen.
“Sovereign citizen cooker,” one person wrote.
“That plate is a warning to you that this person isn’t registered or has insurance. Run away,” someone else said.
Another person provided a more thorough explanation: They tend to get their facts from Facebook and a lot of what they think is law (or isn’t law for that matter) is taken from misinterpretations of US constitutional law and not even relevant in Australia,” they said.
“At the end of the day, they still pay taxes and still utilise free education, healthcare, and local and state facilities, all the while under the protection of State and Federal law.
“But shhh — don’t tell them. We just let them think they’re ‘sovereign citizens’.”
