Roanoke Rescue Mission working to feed thousands on Thanksgiving through Drumstick DASH

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Racers are lining up in Roanoke Thursday morning for the 16th annual Drumstick DASH, which serves a very important purpose for the Star City community.

The 5k walk/run is a Thanksgiving Day tradition for thousands of families in the Roanoke Valley.

The race also raises thousands of dollars for the Rescue Mission of Roanoke, which typically serves more than 200,000 meals a year to the homeless and families in need.

While the in-person Drumstick DASH is getting underway at 8 a.m. in Rivers Edge Park on Thursday, Nov. 25, the virtual race will continue through the end of the month.

As a result, the Rescue Mission encourages more people to register for the race to help the organization meet their financial goal for feeding the community this year.

As of this writing, the Drumstick DASH website says that donors have raised $22,877 out of the $25,000 goal for the Rescue Mission. You can also contribute to the cause by clicking here.

The Rescue Mission says every dollar that is raised from the DASH goes toward dining experiences for their guests.

If you would like to walk or run in the DASH, registration is still open for the in-person DASH on Thanksgiving Day, as well as the virtual DASH, which takes place through Tuesday, Nov. 30.
