School Strike 4 Climate: Aussie students to hold rallies, online meetings

Aussie students are rallying in public and online today for the fifth School Strike 4 Climate ahead of a global summit.

Aussie students will again take to the streets and the internet to make their voices heard about the climate crisis ahead of a global summit in Glasgow later this month.

Coronavirus concerns in some of the country’s major cities means some of Friday’s School Strike 4 Climate protests will be held online.

The events will be go ahead in cities across the country throughout Friday, with virtual gatherings replacing marches in virus hot spots including Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.

It is the fifth iteration of the event, with the last protests in May drawing thousands of school kids and adults to flood city streets.

In-person rallies are set to be held in major cities Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and Darwin and in regional towns including Ballarat, Alice Springs, Cairns, Geelong and the Sunshine Coast.

Online events will also be held in Newcastle and the Central Coast, which remain areas of concern for Covid-19 transmission.

Some of the events, including those at Toowoomba, Mornington and Wangaratta, will take place outside of school hours.

“Join us on October 15, two weeks before the COP 26 global climate summit by taking the day off school, work or uni to tell the government that we’re serious about climate action, and won’t go away until they stop selling our futures,” the event’s website proclaims.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison attracted criticism after he suggested he would not be attending the conference in Glasgow, set to begin on October 31.

The stance prompted Prince Charles to urge Mr Morrison to attend in an interview with the BBC, saying the world was in a “last chance saloon” to prevent dangerous climate change.

Mr Morrison has reportedly since reconsidered his position and may travel to Scotland.
