Trans model Leyna Bloom breaks ground as Sports Illustrated cover star

Model Leyna Bloom has become the first openly transgender woman to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s annual swimsuit issue.

The 2021 Swimsuit edition features three cover stars: Bloom, tennis star Naomi Osaka and rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Bloom told how the history-making moment had been sparked 24 years ago when she skimmed the 1997 edition, which at the time was fronted by supermodel Tyra banks.

“When they told me I got the cover, I spoke to my dad,” she told Page Six.

“I was like, ‘When I was looking at that magazine (in 1997) … I was looking into my future’.”

“In 1997 (Banks), in a polkadot bikini, became the first Black woman to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit,” she shared.

“Fast forward to 24 years later, I was given the chance to sit down with her to discuss making history as the first trans woman to be on the cover of the same magazine,” she shared.

Sports Illustrated gave fans a taste of their highly anticipated annual swimsuit issue on the runway in Miami last week, with a refreshingly diverse slate of curvy models — even pregnant models — demonstrating what the hottest summer trends would look like on every body.

Among them was Thai/German model Amanda Kay and influencer Natalie Mariduena, Natalie Gage and Kathy Jacobs – who made history as their oldest and shortest rookie model ever.
